About White Flower Farm

White Flower Farm is a family-owned plant nursery based in Northwest Connecticut. The heart of our business is the robust greenhouse- and field-growing operation that supports our nationally renowned online, mail-order business. We also maintain a store and extensive display gardens in Morris, CT. Since 1950, we've been growing a wide range of ornamental, native, and edible plant varieties and delivering them to gardeners all over the country. Over the years, our company has expanded to also offer the world’s finest garden tools and supplies, indoor plants, select garden décor, fresh-cut flower bouquets, and botanically inspired gifts. Our mission is to help gardeners succeed by supplying top-quality plant material and supplies, comprehensive cultural information, and superior customer service. Whether you are an experienced horticulturalist on the lookout for uncommon cultivars or a newcomer to gardening, we're here to help.

White Flower Farm's history dates back to the late 1930s when the company's founders, New York City publishing veterans William Harris and Jane Grant, moved to Connecticut and promptly caught the gardening bug. Before long, their shared hobby had evolved into a small business. By the early 1950s, White Flower Farm was mailing catalogs, and Harris and Grant’s burgeoning enterprise looked something like the company that exists today. (For an expanded version of White Flower Farm’s history, please visit our blog.)

In the 1950s, the wide world of horticulture was little known to most Americans. Harris and Grant took it upon themselves to expose customers to the latest developments in gardening along with plant introductions from the UK, Europe, Japan, and elsewhere. They created the first White Flower Farm catalogs and filled them with information designed to educate, inspire, and delight American gardeners. The White Flower Farm catalog became a reliable source not only of diverse, top-quality plants but also of the information, advice, and how-to support necessary to grow them. It is a tradition we continue today in the belief that growing great plants means growing great gardeners.

Harris and Grant sold White Flower Farm to the Wadsworth family in 1976. Today, our full-time staff numbers several dozen. Many are professional horticulturalists and enthusiastic home gardeners. Under the stewardship of the Wadsworths, the company has also built a reputation for outstanding customer service. We are grateful for the support of our customers and for the delightful and mutually educational dialogs we maintain with many of them.

The world we live in continues to evolve, and with it, the ways in which we do business. The company prioritizes sustainability and environmentally sound practices – from installing a solar array that significantly offsets our energy consumption to incorporating recyclable or compostable materials wherever possible to relying on IPM (integrated pest management) practices in our greenhouses and thereby limiting our use of pesticides. Our plant offering now includes an expanding group of native plant species in response to an emerging approach to home gardening that emphasizes ecology and the sustenance of biodiversity even in residential landscapes.

Looking forward, we have plenty of work to do. The needs and desires of our customers will continue to change, and we are committed to doing our utmost to meet them.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about us. As always, we welcome your feedback and hope to hear from you.
